Love is a Choice, Not an Emotion/ El Amor es una Elección, no una Emoción

Love is a Choice, Not an Emotion

Many times people mistake Love for an emotion. But the truth is that love is a choice we make. Even though many people like to think that they cannot control their emotions, the truth is that if we are not in control of our emotions, then who is?

Emotions come from our thoughts. And we control our thoughts.  Thus we control our emotions. There may be some that argue that they can't control their thoughts, because they keep having crazy thoughts without them planning it. But here's the deal. While it may be true that some thoughts may come into our mind without us really planning it, once they are there, we can actively change them.

How you may ask?

By actively replacing an unwanted thought with another. Let's say you see an ad for a burger place. Now you have craving for burger. You can actively say: I am not going to eat a burger because it makes me feel bad. I will eat something healthy instead. You eat something healthy; engage your thoughts in something else that is not burger ads and in a short time you will forget about that burger.

We are not helpless to life. We were given free will for a reason.

While it's true that we can't control everything that happens to us, we can control 100% how we react to the things that happen to us.

The same applies to Love, we choose who we Love, and who we don’t love. We may be stubborn to the fact that we want a particular person over another, but the act of Loving is a choice.

The Bible says we should love our neighbors as ourselves, and the truth is that we should choose to love as many people as we possibly can, we should choose to love all of humanity.
But how about romantic love? Is that also a Choice?

I believe it is. Although it is true that we have a particular tendency to be attracted to a certain kind of people, and there are particular qualities that we look for, the person we choose to Love, is actually a choice. We choose someone because they have the qualities that we want for a life partner, because we consciously believe that this person is better for us and that we have a better chance to life a rewarding life next to them.

We are not stuck loving someone who is wrong for us.  We have a choice. We always do.
Think about that the next time you are feeling like you have no control over this. Stop for a moment and think to yourself. Do I really want this? I do have a choice.

Do you agree or disagree with this? Tell us your story.
