Why Pretend

A few days ago I was listening to the daughter of a friend. She was nervous about going to class in a new school because she was about to start High School. This topic was strange for me because I grew up and studied in Dominican Republic, my homeland, and I don’t have much knowledge about American customs. So it was odd to hear her say that she would not wear brand name clothes just to be accepted by her new classmates.

Seeing her reaction to this new phase of her life was strange for me. I was surprised that a girl would say that she would not want to dress with expensive name brands to be accepted. What is wrong with the youth of today that to be accepted by their peers they must wear brand name clothes otherwise they will be rejected. I see no need for people to get to the point of trying to be someone else for your classmates to accept you. It is ironic to see how society today is divided by the color of their skin, economic status or simply by their sexual preference. I invite you, the reader, to think about this: Why do I have to turn away people who are in different socio-economic levels or simply because they have a skin color different from mine?

You, who choose to reject those who you see as different than you. Please remember that these people are just like you, and just like you, they seek acceptance by society and love from others. Do not reject anyone simply because they are different from you.

Porque Aparentar

Hace unos días estuve  escuchando hablar la hija de una amiga y su tema eran los nervios por entrar a clases ya que salía de la primaria y entraba a la High School. Su tema era algo extraño para mí ya que crecí y estudié en República Dominicana, mi tierra natal, al no tener las costumbres americanas y mucho menos conocerlas, para mí fue extraño escucharla decir que no vestiría con ropas de marcas para ser aceptada por sus nuevos compañeros/as.

Al ver su reacción con esa nueva etapa de su vida encontré extraño que una nena como ella no quisiera vestir de marcas caras para ser aceptada por sus nuevos compañeros.  A donde ha llegado la juventud de hoy día que para ser aceptados tienen que vestir de marca o de lo contrario serán rechazados,  no veo necesidad de llegar al punto de tratar ser otra persona para que tus compañeros te acepten, es irónico ver como la sociedad de hoy se divide por su color de piel, estatus económico o simple
mente preferencia sexual, te invito a ti que lees esto a pensar lo siguiente: ¿Por qué tengo que rechazar a aquellas personas que están en diferentes niveles sociales, económicos o que solo son de un color de piel diferente al mío..

Y a ti, que rechazas a aquellas personas que son diferentes ante tus ojos. Te recuerdo que esas personas son iguales a ti, porque al igual que tú, ellos buscan aceptación por la sociedad y amor de los demás. No rechaces a nadie por que sea diferente a ti.
