Verdades del Humor: Como Aceptar Cumplidos/There is truth in Humor: How to Accept Compliments

Ella: Huy no, estoy horrible!

_Aprender a Aceptar cumplidos.

 ------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------

This Friday we have a section called Truths of Humor. This article will take a humorous side as it teaches us a lesson.

Today we will talk about what happens when we don’t know how to accept compliments.

He: My love, you look beautiful!

She:  I look horrible! Don’t you see how fat I am?

I am sure you have seen this type of scenario hundreds of times, and I bet you didn’t realize that this is many times the cause many men stop giving compliments.

Michael Fiore, creator of the www.WhyHeLies.com page explains that men stop giving compliments to women because of something he calls emotional castration, something that many women do unconsciously and without realizing it.

Things that make men feel emotionally castrated:

_ Low self-esteem and constant need for affirmation from women. When a man makes him a compliment and she tells him that just says it because he has to because he's her boyfriend / husband, the man begins to feel rejected and upset and learn it's a bad idea to tell your partner what he thinks of it is a bad idea.

_When men expresses their feelings. When a man says what he feels for a woman, and she tells him he is wrong. For instance:

He: My love, I love you!

She: It's not true, you don’t love me, if you loved me you wouldn’t go out drinking with your friends ever.

In both cases, the woman is basically saying to the man: Your Words Mean Shit to me!

And what can women do to stop castrating man emotionally and prevent them from stopping giving compliments?

_Learn to accept compliments. Most people don’t know how to accept compliments, men and women, they think they are being humble, but the reality is that if someone gives us a compliment and we don’t accept it we are being ... assholes!

Yes, you heard correctly, assholes.

Many people believe that in order to accept a compliment, they have to believe that the compliment is true, but that's not the case. The reality is that what you think doesn’t matter at all. The person who is giving you the compliment believes it to be true, and if you deny the compliment, or decide not to accept it then you are basically denying the other person’s truth, it's like telling them that they don’t know what they’re saying and that they have bad taste and that makes us assholes.

Once we begin to see that compliments are not based on our personal reality, but about the perception of another person, accepting compliments will be a little easier.

What do you think of this? Do you find it difficult to accept compliments?

Do you think that this technique helps you to accept them better?

How Confident are You?/¿Cuán Seguro Estas De Ti Mismo?

When You Know Your Worth, No One Can Make You Feel Less.

How Confident are You?

Most people at some time or another feel unsure of themselves. This usually happens when we begin to grow, and reach puberty. So many changes that happen to us and we begin to doubt or question our value. This is exacerbated in school, if others are more popular than us, or if other young people or teachers tease us etc.

It is virtually impossible to grow and maintain a sense of complete and confident identity, but when we grow into adulthood our value begins to take another form.

There are several factors that impact the sense of self-worth of a person. These include our parents and close relatives, teachers, friends, our social environment, and whether or not we received compliments, or insults, and if we have been given affection or not.

For example, a person who grow up without the love of their parents, maybe they had an abusive or alcoholic parent, or an absent mother, then they feel a certain degree of uncertainty about their value and that person will tend to seek the approval of others.
An insecure person tends to dress to please others, make decisions to please others, their perceived value depends on what people around them tell them. But a person who has high self-esteem knows their value, and it’s not determined by anyone else and they know that it only comes from within.

Some people realize they have low self-esteem and as time passes they work really hard to develop the self-esteem that they lack and then, after a lot of work, they are able to finally see their own value.

Here are a few things that can help you analyze if you need to work on raising your self-esteem:

1. Give up the Martyr Story- Many people with low self-esteem have a Martyr Story, they use it to tell others all the bad things that has happened to them, things like: my father left me, my mother does not accept me, my boyfriend was unfaithful to me, or he abuses me, etc. A self-confident person, doesn’t need to make others feel sorry for them. On the contrary, they don’t want anyone to feel sorry for them, and if they tell their sad story is using it as inspiration to others who are going through the same things in order to let others see that no matter how many bad things have happened to you, you can always bounce back and be victorious.

2. Your Parents Don’t Determine Your Value - Many of us feel that we are NOT valuable because our parents didn’t show us love. You have to see that your parents are human, and make mistakes, our parents often times have lower self-esteem than us, perhaps they are sick, or other number of things. Sometimes it serves to talk to them and ask them if they love us and confront them about the things we feel that hurt us, but on the other hand there are times when our parents are so damaged that even that won’t work. But if your parents have died or are absent or simply have a disease, looking within yourself and have compassion for them, think that they are so broken that they can’t  show love, and in that way you remove the responsibility that you may have given to them to give you value. Know that God is your father, and He loves you and made you with all the love in his power. Your value comes from within you, and from God.

3. Don’t Try To Manipulate Others To Like You - There are people who like to manipulate, making others feel guilty into staying by their side or promising them the world. That is a sign of someone who has low self-esteem. Those that remain by your side for reasons of manipulation, sooner or later they will realize it and leave. It is pointless to tie them, or manipulate them with sad stories or with golden promises.

4. Don’t Look For The Approval Of Others - Accept yourself, if others accept you it’s irrelevant, don’t change or do anything just to please others, do the things that make you happy. You are the one who has to live with yourself for the rest of your life, others come and go. Be yourself always, be genuine, and always do things that go according to your beliefs and values, not by what other people think.

5. Other People Don’t Determine Your Value - Realize that it doesn’t matter what other people think of you, but what you think of yourself, and what God thinks of you. Evaluate your behavior and see if it is a behavior that pleases yourself and God, that's what counts at the end of the day. What people around you do or don’t do doesn’t give, nor takes away your value. Because your worth comes from within. Think about it this way. If you have to choose between an orange and an apple to eat and you pick an apple, does that take away the value of the orange? Do you think the Orange is less of a fruit, less good, less healthy than the apple because you did not choose it? Do you see how silly that sounds? The same happens with people. Whether a person prefers you or not, doesn’t take away nor gives you value. It's just a preference. Remember that for each person that chooses an apple there are always going to be others who will choose the orange.

These are just some things that can help you realize how sure you are of yourself. So analyze yourself, did you see yourself reflected in some of these things on the list? How do you feel about yourself? What value do you see?

And if you realize that you're not giving yourself enough value, assess your situation and work on yourself to develop it and you can see that you really are worth a lot.
Have you identified yourself with some of these things? Or do you see a reflection of someone you know?
