Why can’t we
live the life we want no matter how much we try?
Many of us
live our lives based on what we believe is right. Maybe we started our life caring
only about what made us happy, but when society, our parents, and teachers,
etc., began to tell us that this is right and that is wrong, then we begin to
change our way of seeing life.
By changing
our way of seeing life we live questioning ourselves on whether what we are
doing is the right thing to do. After we start doing this many of us won’t be
able to realize that many times we choose things just because we believe they
are correct based on societal views instead of our own.
This is when
we start throwing mud at who we really are.
Who are we really?
Many of us
won’t be able to answer that question. Maybe we think we know quite well, but
are we really sure of that?
What is our identity? What do we value most?
What are our core beliefs? What are our worst fears? What are our greatest
strengths? What makes us truly happy?
If you don’t
know the answer to these questions, you're not alone. Studies show that 90% of
the population is living a life that is not congruent with their true self.
An example
of this is when a person likes to live the simple life, but they are always buying
expensive things. This person is not acting in a manner consistent with what they
say.
Other
examples of living life in a way that does not agree with who you really are:
- Working
in a job that you don’t really enjoy
- Staying
in a relationship that isn’t quite right.
- Excessive
accumulation of material things
- The
feeling of being stuck, bored or unhappy
- Lack of
meaning and purpose in life
When you
live your life in a way that is not in tune with your inner truth, your life is
never going to feel like it's okay, there's always going to be a sense that
something is wrong, an eternal feeling of "blah"
Many people
make the mistake of using external things or circumstances to help them to
create their identity. For example, their work, their possessions, their
relationship status etc. Only to then realize that these things are temporary
and are not determinative of the inner reality within us.
Living an
authentic life also means that you must be responsible for your own life, you can’t
rely on absolutely nobody and nothing to determine who you are. You can only
count on yourself for this.
Living out
of tune with your true self prevents you from moving forward and living the
life of your dreams.
Without a
thorough understanding of who you are, what your strengths are, your
weaknesses, your fears, your filters and your beliefs, you can’t truly understand
your deepest desires nor how to create true happiness.
To live the
life we are destined to live we must look within ourselves and ask questions
about these 8 key areas of our lives, and remember, this is personal, and you
don’t have to show this to anyone, but you must be brutally honest with
yourself and make sure that none of the answers are based on what you believe
is correct and socially acceptable, but you must answer with out most honest
sincerity of what you really feel inside of you regardless of whether it is accepted
by your family, or friends, or if it’s or not socially acceptable or anything
like that.
Self-Assessment Exercise
Make a
table with the following columns, one for each item, and then assign it a
number from 1 to 10 according to how you feel about each of them, with 10 being
completely happy and 1 being completely unhappy.
- Career – this is your work,
professional development.
- Finances - reflects the state of your
financial health, savings, retirement plan, debts, assets
- Health - your physical, mental and
emotional well being.
- Family and Friends - people in your
life who you love and care for, your support system
- Development and Personal Growth - Those
things you do to continue to grow spiritually and personally, includes living
with purpose, passion and meaning.
- Fun and Recreation - activities you do
in your spare time.
- Relationship - Your primary love relationship.
- Environment - your home or living
situation, including the city and the area where you live.
Once you
have given a number to each of these things you will see areas of your life
that you need to change. Start with the areas that have the lowest numbers, and
begins taking steps to improve those areas. Every few months do this exercise
and see that little by little you will start to live the life that is in
alignment with your purpose.
What did
you learn from this exercise? Are you living the life you should be living?

virtudes, tus fuerzas y tus debilidades, tus miedos, tus filtros y tus
realidades.
